West Virginia "is the first state to be awarded federal money to turn around the lowest performing schools in the state, state schools Superintendent Steve Paine said Thursday," notes the Charleston Gazette.
The nearly $22 million in School Improvement Grant funds comes with big changes. Schools must agree to big changes, such as firing principals, closing schools, cutting staff and allowing only half the teachers to return at low performing schools.
